TWITTER + ATHLETES=LOADED WEAPON

Posted on 05:41 by raja rani

Nothing much has changed since I wrote last year that the only thing more dangerous than
Plaxico Burress with a gun is an athlete with a Twitter account. The 140 characters allowed
in a tweet might as well be live bullets because athletes have taken dumb to a new level while
continuing to shoot themselves in the foot.

Stephanie McCaffrey of Boston College was the latest athlete to tweet herself into trouble.
The woman's soccer player fired off 10 tweets about Penn State shortly before the Eagles
were to face the Nitany Lions in the NCAA Tournament. You don't have to be a rocket
scientist to figure out what the content dealt with:

"I wonder if well get into the visitors locker room at Penn State. I hear the
showers are 10 and under. Raping at Penn State to getting raped at state Penn."

McCaffrey was promptly suspended for her insensitivity and utter stupidity. Now she's on the
Internet forever and will have a tough time getting by that one in job interviews after her
illustrious soccer career ends.

McCaffrey joins the long list of athletes who have fired up their Twitter accounts and tried
to get a cheap laugh from the social media world. You remember the tweet from Cappie
Pondexter, the all-world basketball player from the New York Liberty after the Tsunami
wiped out Japan, don't you?

"What if God was tired of the way they treated their own people
in there own country! Idk guys he makes no mistakes."
She later tweeted: "u just never knw! They did pearl harbor so
                                         u can't expect anything less."

Stupid, silly, and ridiculously insensitive. If anybody cared about Pondexter or the
WNBA, she would've been suspended from the league, and yes, it's still in existence.

The remarkable part of all this Twitter self-destruction is that athletes just don't learn
from other people's mistakes. Amare Stoudemire, the often-injured, overpaid superstar
of the New York Knicks responded to a fan who told him to work hard in the off-season
to make up for a disappointing year.

"F*%k You. I don't have to do anything Fag"

Oh, that's a great comeback, Amare. I know you make $20 million a year, but that
$50,000 the NBA fined you for that stupid remark will be enough for the league to
purchase Christmas gifts for all it's employees this year. Commissioner David Stern
thanks you.

I really don't get the Twitter sensation. Isn't Facebook, e-mail, and text enough? Good,
Lord. And I really don't get while people want to sign up to "follow" athletes and celebrities.
It seems quite juvenile to me, not to mention a bit psychotic. You're telling me you
actually care what a guy like Amare Stoudemire is thinking? Seriously? Are people
really that bored with their lives? Do they get a buzz from reading what Chad
Ochocinco is eating for dinner?

What causes athletes and people in our society to Tweet? Are they just obsessed with
getting a  LOL or "like" to re-affirm their humor or genius, which usually ends up as
stupidity. and getting  in trouble. I really just don't understand it, and apparently,
a lot of athletes don't, either.
